Social Issues—Suggested For Grades 9 through 12

Goals
Learners will develop an awareness of the social issues affecting Internet use including cyber relationships, cyber dating, the grooming process, cyber stalking, etc. This awareness will lead to an understanding of safer Internet usage to minimize risks.

Description
This webcast is designed to increase student awareness of the concept that there are many new social issues associated with Internet usage such as cyber relationships, cyber dating, the grooming process, and cyber stalking, and that there are dangers inherent to each. The primary objective of this lesson is to equip students with knowledge that will enable them to make responsible choices regarding their usage of the Internet and to empower them to be better cyber citizens.

The lesson is comprised of several key elements:
  1. The webcast delivered via www.isafe.org
  2. Directed discussion breaks during the webcast for students in the classroom, facilitated by the classroom instructors
  3. Cooperative group exercises at the conclusion of the webcast, which include implementation of a Youth Empowerment activity
Learning Objectives
The i-SAFE webcast, Social Issues, will enable students to:
  • Understand the dangers of cyber relationships conducted online.
  • Be able to prevent dangerous behaviors from occurring in their online activities.
  • Understand the resources available to them if confronted with dangerous online behavior.
  • Act appropriately in their everyday online activities when it comes to cyber relationships, cyber dating, and cyber stalking.
  • Understand and be able to recognize the grooming process.
