i-©®eaTM is a new, dynamic curriculum that inspires students to be creative and teaches
them about the value of patents, trademarks, and copyrights, as well as the
importance of respecting other’s intellectual property. The i-©®eaTM curriculum,
developed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in collaboration
with i-SAFE, is an interactive and age appropriate series of lesson plans
designed for upper-elementary, middle, and high school students.
“If you own something that is valuable, you want to protect it. Since U.S. intellectual
property today is worth more than $5 trillion, it is important that future inventors
understand the process of protecting intellectual property, and that we instill
an innovative spirit among students to keep the flow of innovation alive,” said
Jon Dudas, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director
of the USPTO.
The i-©®eaTM curriculum is a valuable resource for teachers to introduce students
to the inventive process through cross-curricular activities, inspirational
stories of young inventors, and practical hands-on patent and trademark searching
on the Internet. Students apply their knowledge and skills to real life experiences
and view themselves as creative individuals. In turn, young people, their parents,
and their teachers gain an appreciation of the contributions inventors and artists
make to our way of life.Click here for

i-SAFE uses a train-the-trainer model for professional development. The i-SAFE
Professional Development Program (PDP) is a training session which allows teachers,
law enforcement, and administrators to become a Certified Trainer in e-Safety.
The certification process includes a comprehensive explanation of e-Safety
concepts, a sneak peak at sample i-SAFE lesson plans for grades K-12, and detailed
instruction on the steps to implement the i-SAFE program. i-SAFE provides four ways to participate in an i-SAFE Professional Development Program:
- i-LEARN Online i-LEARN Online – The most popular way to become i-SAFE
certified brings the PDP to your fingertips, through a series of online training
videos, or modules. View all the e-Safety video lessons at your convenience
on any computer with Internet access. Or, choose and watch the Intellectual
Property module, which includes a chapter about Patents and Trademarks (click to watch a trailer for a brief sample of the Patents and Trademarks chapter). Completing
that video module certifies you to teach only the i-SAFE Intellectual Property
curriculum in class, including the new i-©®eaTM curriculum. To begin your
i-LEARN Online training, click here.
- Premier PDP This version is hosted in your area by an i-SAFE Certified Trainer. Attend a PDP in your area by checking the Calendar of Events.
- Premier Video PDP This version of the PDP is in the form of a DVD. It is also hosted in your area by an i-SAFE Certified Trainer.
- Virtual Training Academy i-SAFE's Virtual Training Academy (VTA)
is live, interactive online training. It’s similar to the classroom and allows
participants to collaborate with others across the country and engage in discussions
with those involved in the same session. Attendees can train together online
while listening to the presentation, asking questions, hearing others' questions,
and getting answers, live. To see a schedule of upcoming VTA trainings click

Have i-SAFE conduct a PDP for your school and/or group of educators with an i-SAFE trainer in person. Contact i-SAFE directly at: education@isafe.org

After you become certified to teach i-SAFE, submit an Implementation Plan (IP)
to request materials. All downloadable resources are immediately available
in a PDF file on your “My Info” page. Webcasts, larger presentations, and training
materials will be sent on CD or DVD. Please allow three weeks for delivery.
Steps to submit an implementation plan:
- Go to i-SAFE at www.isafe.org
- Log in with your username and password. You will automatically be taken to your “My Info” page.
- Select “Submit Implementation Plan.”
- Choose which event or activity you will be implementing.*
- Enter your event information.
- Print page for your records, and click “Submit.”
*Remember to submit a new Implementation Plan each time you use program materials!
This ensures that you have the most up-to-date materials, and provides i-SAFE
reporting information to continue to develop new e-Safety program materials.

Each main lesson of the i-©®eaTM curriculum is supported by a selection of “Curriculum
Connections,” cross-curricular activities, including Historical Connections,
Be Inspired (true stories of creativity and invention) and Technology Connections.
Before you can access this curriculum you need an account. Get started!
This is your opportunity to empower students through problem-solving exercises,
exploration, creativity and the inventive process, while engaging them to learn
about the intellectual property protections of patents, trademarks, copyright,
and trade secrets.
Important! Before teaching i-SAFE lessons, direct your students to complete
a brief online assessment survey. The anonymous pre-assessment
data is collected and stored by i-SAFE’s National Assessment Center (NAC). It
provides valuable information about students’ existing behavior. Just as important,
after the final i-SAFE lesson, direct your students to complete the post-assessment
survey, and the outcome assessment, 4-6 weeks later. The National Assessment
Center’s reports have become a valuable and trusted source to measure the effectiveness
of the e-Safety lessons. i-SAFE uses this information to keep its dynamic, interactive
e-Safety curriculum up-to-date and relevant to what’s happening online.
